Today’s Big Thing is a pretty tame site. We generally try to keep things upbeat. As you can probably guess, we don’t get much hate mail. Usually. Today I had this confusing e-mail conversation with one angry (first time) viewer. His emails are the ones in bold. My e-mails are the sane ones in normal type.
Have you ignorant scum thought of professional drug treatment or having your parents incarcerated for failure to raise worthwhile children?
Hi ******, We haven’t considered either of those options. May I ask what we did that made you so upset?
Don’t remember other than vaguely recalling the email was repulsive. Why don’t you send it back to me and I’ll try and answer your question.
I don’t have any previous correspondence with you saved in my inbox. Perhaps it was something from our Web site, todaysbigthing.com? I’m curious, because our content is usually very tame. I’m not sure what you would have found repulsive.
I found your delightful video. http://www.todaysbigthing.com/2009/04/17
Why would you send this around? What’s the point?
(Shortly followed by)
The piece on Cleveland. Again, what’s the point?
It’s just a silly comedy video. It’s not meant to be taken seriously. I don’t see anything offensive about it. The point is to laugh, I suppose.
You demean my home town? Who the hell are you? Do you live here? Give me your tel # and I’ll explain to you what you were never obviously taught. What’s sad is that you just don’t get it.
Now the gentleman’s contact and work info was included under his first e-mail. He is a real estate broker in Ohio. I wasted no time in calling him. Disappointingly, he was calm and did not scream at all. He did go on and on about how I’m 24, and that the problem with my generation is that we don’t respect anything, and how it’s this kind of thing that contributes to bullying that leads to kids killing themselves, and how I’ll never get it, how he’s never heard of my home town, and how if I go to Cleveland he’ll show me why Cleveland is amazing. I calmly tried to explain to him that the video was not a legitimate attack on Cleveland and that it’s ok to have the humility to be able to laugh at yourself. We agreed to disagree.
It was awesome.
